ounded in 1974 by veterans, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides needs assessment and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to roughly 3,000 veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area each year. We also advocate on behalf of veterans and provide community education for over 1,500 first responders, employers, social workers, attorneys, and other professionals who engage with veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides healthcare and benefits to a percentage of veterans, but depends on community partners, including Swords to Plowshares, to fill in the gaps and meet the needs of those who have served. Our community comes together to deliver local, comprehensive services to meet the needs of our veterans.

We have developed the most comprehensive model of care in the country and we are nationally recognized for our programs, advocacy, and expertise. In addition to our programs, we promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education and partnerships with local, state and national entities. Our holistic approach is based on the philosophy that veterans’ health and stability issues—homelessness, service-related disabilities, unemployment, substance abuse—are interrelated and require an integrated system of support.

Our veterans are falling through the cracks in communities throughout our country. In general, it falls to private, non-profit corporations and foundations like VAF to create a safety net by working with community members, local businesses, and people that care to help coordinate benefits, resources, and serviceChoosing where to put your support is important and it seems every day there is a news report of someone being unscrupulous with s.donations; those hurt worst by this behavior are veterans who need help. When you make the choice to help homeless veterans, we honor your generosity by putting your money and other types of donations to work directly where you intended...and where it will do the most good, with the veterans that so desperately need your help!

These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar has gone directly to our program services for Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.

Battlefields to Ballfields will provide veterans an opportunity to integrate back into their communities through officiating and scholarships.

The Foundation will pay for uniforms and dues that are required by the associations the veterans will join at the local level. Battlefields to Ballfields will pay for their equipment, training materials, insurance, and provide a mentor--who will train and follow them as they move up the ladder in officiating.

Those who have been involved in officiating already have felt the joy of stepping out onto the field or a court. With it comes a great sense of value that leaves one with a feeling of accomplishment.

In serving in the military, and in officiating, there’s the common bond of being a member of a team and creating order out of chaos. Battlefields to Ballfields will provide these veterans with an opportunity to hone their newfound officiating skills and participate in something that will give them a new sense of self-worth along with the ability to make some extra income.

While the ultimate goal will be to get some of our returning veterans into the upper levels of officiating, including the professional ranks, they will start out at the local level working high school and youth level games.

Veterans Crisis Line

Services Provided:

The caring responders at the Veterans Crisis Line are specially trained and experienced in helping Veterans of all ages and circumstances. Some of the responders are Veterans themselves and understand what Veterans and their families and friends have been through and the challenges Veterans of all ages and service eras face.

Since its launch in 2007, the Veterans Crisis Line has answered nearly 2.8 million calls and initiated the dispatch of emergency services to callers in crisis nearly 74,000 times. The Veterans Crisis Line anonymous online chat service, added in 2009, has engaged in more than 332,000 chats. In November 2011, the Veterans Crisis Line introduced a text-messaging service to provide another way for Veterans to connect with confidential, round-the-clock support, and since then has responded to more than 67,000 texts.

In 2011, the National Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline was renamed the Veterans Crisis Line to encourage Veterans and their families and friends to make the call. People who know a Veteran best may be the first to recognize emotional distress and reach out for support when issues reach a crisis point — and well before a Veteran is at risk of suicide.

To make sure all Veterans and their loved ones are aware of the Veterans Crisis Line, VA is coordinating with communities and partners nationwide to let Veterans and their loved ones know that support is available whenever, if ever, they need it.

Every 19 seconds someone in the United States sustains a traumatic brain injury (TBI). That adds up to 1.7 million people each year. Brain injuries range from mild to moderate to severe. Every injury is different, but when your brain is injured, it can affect everything: your ability to speak, focus, remember, and relate to other people.

BrainLine is a national multimedia project offering information and resources about preventing, treating, and living with TBI. BrainLine includes a series of webcasts, an electronic newsletter, and an extensive outreach campaign in partnership with national organizations concerned about traumatic brain injury.

BrainLine serves anyone whose life has been affected by TBI. That includes people with brain injury, their families, professionals in the field, and anyone else in a position to help prevent or ameliorate the toll of TBI.

BrainLine also provides military-specific information and resources on traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to veterans, service members, and their families. Through video, webcasts, articles, personal stories, research briefs, and current news, those whose lives have been affected by TBI can learn more about brain injury symptoms and treatment, rehabilitation, and family issues associated with TBI care and recovery.

Through BrainLine, we seek to provide a sense of community, a place where people who care about TBI can go 24 hours a day for information, support, and ideas.

Free confidential therapy for Post 9/11 Veterans & their loved ones.

In 2004, Dr. Judith Broder took a walk on the beach. She came across Arlington West, the “temporary cemetery” that was installed near the Santa Monica pier in order to bring public attention to the growing death rate of the Iraq War. Soon after, she attended a production of The Sandstorm, a play about marines coming home from the conflict in Iraq, and decided that as a psychiatrist, she needed to do more to help a new generation assimilate back from war. The Soldiers Project was born.
With help from colleagues and friends, The Soldiers Project launched as a sponsored project of the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies Trauma Center. For many years, the organization relied solely on the generosity of volunteers and pro bono mental health professionals. In September 2010, The Soldiers Project was incorporated as 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and began to hire its first professional staff.
Since then, The Soldiers Project has provided free and confidential treatment to thousands of military service members and their families, and provided trainings in best clinical practices to thousands of clinicians via in-person conferences, symposia and online webinars.
